| | | | | Dangerous for Phoning Behind the Wheels by Semeng Wang | | | Many of us believe we hold our lives dear, but in fact it is not often the case. We do not really realize we are equal to commit suicide when we do something seemingly safe but actually dangerous. The advancement of science and technology has been bringing great convenience to us, but at the same time making us more exposed to the uncertainties.
Both cars and cell phones are such things as mentioned. People benefit a lot from them. They speed our lives, save our times and comfort us by sparing lots of our labor in walking. But they are not always friendly to us. In the world of 2008, more than 0.5 million people died of traffic accident, ranking top one killer. To make matters worse, people now double the seriousness by cooperating cell phone use and driving together with the fatal outcomes.
It is not a novelty for us to own cars and cell phones nowadays. But it seems the more fast speed our lives become, the less patient we are. We are rushing for errands, unable to wait. It is not wrong to work hard, but what we are busy with? The answer will be to better our conditions and realize our dreams. But who will say “I am anxious to kiss King of Terrors or to embrace God.”?
The happening rate of car crashes by this multitasking is even outnumbering that of drunk driving. Both result from distraction, which NHTSA estimates contributes to about 25% of all car crashes. The response ability of a young person driving while using cell phones is equal to that of a 70 years old, with strain capacity greatly lowered. Thus such a person is four times more likely entering into a traffic accident than others.
Death by car crashes brings great pains to families. As result of no mental preparation, many relatives of victims could not accept the truth and suffer the depression or self-reproach for a period. Such psychology may partly attribute to the fact that they believe the accident should not have happened if they show more care to the victims.
There are severe laws about drunk driving. But what have we done about cell phone use while driving, since it is equally or even more dangerous. Researcher said hand free laws may not work. Both hand-held and hand free cell phones increase the risk of a crash, and there is little, if any, difference between them, according to a Draft Letter prepared for Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta to send.
California decided to ban texting message while driving a car in September 2008. The law took effect this year. A first-time offender would be fined $20 and a repeat one $50. New Jersey also issued such a law, with an offender being fined under $250. The state had banned phoning during driving on the highway before. But it may be difficult for police to control such a behavior, because drivers tend to phone beyond the reach of polices’ eyes. Unlike drunk driving, it is a temporary behavior without evidence to check.
Urgent situation calls more effective solutions. Many advices are offered by people such as raising insurance premium, jamming the circuitry, educating, and making it a licensed activity. A unique advice is about Silicone wristbands in http://www.ybuw.com/. We can wear the Silicone wristbands with the message No Phoning While Driving, Be Careful, or Keep Away for Safety. Whenever we raise our hand about to receive or send a call, the bright letters on the striking wristband remind us to be careful, like what our friends or mates would like to send us, a loving message!!
For both yourself and those you love. Value life!!!
